Crypto Fraud Crackdown: Met Police Arrest Five in Multi-Million Pound Scam

In a significant development for financial crime enforcement, the Metropolitan Police have arrested five individuals in connection with a large-scale cryptocurrency investment fraud. The arrests, made on 1 October 2025 across various London addresses, mark a pivotal moment in the fight against digital asset scams, which continue to proliferate across the UK and globally.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 37, were detained on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud. They have since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

The investigation, led by the Met’s Economic Crime team, centres on a sophisticated scheme involving multiple websites that falsely claimed to offer lucrative pre-sale investment opportunities in emerging cryptocurrencies.

How the Scams worked

The entities included well known cryptocurrency scam groups such as:

  • DTX Exchange (dtxexchange.com)
  • Intel Markets (intelmarkets.io)
  • Cryptids (cryptidsgame.io)
  • Algo Tech Trades (algotech.trade)
  • Unilabs Finance (unilabs.finance)

The fraudsters appeared to offer unique opportunities to received high, too good to be true, levels of return on investments- upwards of 100%.

The sophistication of these firms was such that many of these websites had previously operated under different domain names, making them harder to trace and increasing the risk to investors.  Professional-looking content, fake celebrity endorsements led by AI generated photo’s and videos, and aggressive marketing tactics worked to lure in unsuspecting victims. Once funds were transferred, they became virtually impossible to recover.

The fraudsters allegedly employed a network of “boiler room” setups based in London, where victims were contacted via phone and pressured into making further investments. This high-pressure sales environment is a hallmark of traditional investment scams, now repurposed for the digital age.

Police Response

Although the wider investigation is still in its early stages, authorities believe the scam has affected thousands of victims, not just in London but across the UK and potentially worldwide. Losses are estimated to run into the millions, with many individuals having invested substantial sums based on false promises.

In addressing the crackdown, Detective Sergeant Stephen Bourne of the Metropolitan Police commented:

“We recognise the devastating impact that fraud can have on people and that’s why we’re committed to investigating crimes of this nature and supporting those affected. These websites are highly convincing… Once cryptocurrency is sent, it is almost impossible to recover.”

The Met Police have issued strong warnings to the public, urging caution when investing in cryptocurrency. They recommend checking the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) warning list which offers practical advice on avoiding digital asset scams.

Legal Implications for Victims and Final Thoughts

For law firms specialising in fraud, this case underscores the evolving nature of financial crime and the urgent need for legal support tailored to digital asset fraud.

While the operation represents a positive step in seeking justice for the victims of such scams, many will continue to be deprived of their funds as the funds have been siphoned through unregulated cryptocurrency wallets.

This can leave those that have been affected feeling like a hollow victory.
