If you’ve fallen victim to fraud as a NatWest customer, it’s not guaranteed that your bank will refund the money you’ve lost. Although banks have a duty of care to protect their customers, we’re seeing many wrongly denied reimbursement claims for cases of fraud.
Below, we explain how likely NatWest is to compensate you, the common types of fraud NatWest customers fall victim to, and how we can help you reclaim money lost from fraud.
The common types of NatWest Bank fraud
Here are some of the most common cases of bank fraud we’re seeing:
APP Fraud
Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud happens when a scammer tricks you into sending money to their account. A common tactic is impersonating a trusted organisation.
For example, you receive a call from someone claiming to be from NatWest. They tell you your account has been hacked and urge you to transfer your funds into an alternative “safe” account. However, this account belongs to the scammer.
Phishing Scams
Scammers often impersonate trusted organisations in phishing scams (such as NatWest) to try to trick you into sharing sensitive information or transferring money into other accounts.
In this case, you may receive messages, such as emails, texts, or phone calls, claiming to be from NatWest. These messages often contain links to fake websites that request your sensitive information or install viruses on your devices.
Debit or Credit Card Fraud
Fraudsters also target your card details, using skimming devices, compromised ATMs, or large-scale data breaches to steal your card information. Once they’ve sourced your details, they often use them to make unauthorised purchases.
How to report bank fraud with NatWest
If you’ve been scammed, it’s always best to report it to the bank and to Action Fraud—the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime. Reporting fraud not only provides clarity on your specific case, but it also helps to keep others safe from falling victim to scams.
NatWest recommends using their online form in the NatWest app or Online Banking to report fraud. You can do this by:
- Logging in to your Online Banking or mobile app
- Selecting the transaction you want to query
- Clicking on the ‘Report a dispute, fraud, or scam’ link
- Clicking on the ‘Report Fraud’ option
- You can also contact the bank by calling them.
Will NatWest refund money lost to scams?
Reporting fraud doesn’t always guarantee that NatWest will refund you. Whether they do often comes down to whether the bank believes they took reasonable steps to protect you, and whether you followed the correct procedure for reporting the scam. This includes the following steps set out by NatWest:
- Making NatWest aware of the scam as quickly as you can.
- Following security warnings and advice from NatWest.
- Not sharing your financial information too carelessly.
What can I do if NatWest failed to protect me from fraud?
From October 2024, new rules require UK banks to investigate scam claims thoroughly and fairly. This means if you’re the victim of fraud and believe NatWest didn’t take the right steps to protect you, or didn’t properly review your case, you could be entitled to compensation.
As an SRA-regulated firm, we can help you challenge NatWest’s decision and build a strong claim for reimbursement.
