How Does the HyperVerse Scam Work?

Colourful bitcoin icon

HyperVerse was a $1.89bn crypto Ponzi and pyramid scheme that collapsed in 2022. It sold HVT tokens, promised daily returns of 0.5 to 1 percent, and used gaming, social and “metaverse” branding to attract Voyagers. Members were also rewarded for recruiting others, which helped the hyperverse scam spread across global communities.

New deposits funded earlier payouts, and the SEC found no legitimate revenue behind the scheme. The platform used fake credibility, including actor Stephen Harrison posing as CEO “Steven Reece Lewis” with fabricated Leeds, Cambridge and Goldman Sachs credentials, while Sam Lee and Ryan Xu were linked to the scheme after Blockchain Global failed. HyperFund, HyperTech, HyperNation, HyperOne and h5.thehyperverse.net were aliases of the same scam, with warnings from the FCA, ASIC, New Zealand FMA and SEC, and investors under any name may still be able to claim.

Frequently asked questions

  • How long did the HyperVerse scam last?

The HyperVerse scheme began in 2020 until its collapse in early 2022.

  • How far did the HyperVerse scam spread?

HyperVerse reached a global scale, targeting investors across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Built on the Bitcoin network and marketed online through social media and webinars, anyone with internet access and cryptocurrency exposure was a potential victim. The scheme particularly devastated developing nations, where promises of financial independence carried even more weight.

  • Was HyperVerse the same as HyperFund?

Yes, HyperFund and HyperVerse were different names for the same wider scheme. The rebrand happened after complaints, withdrawal issues and regulatory concern began to grow. Other linked names included HyperTech, HyperNation and HyperOne.

  • Who is Steven Reece Lewis?

Steven Reece Lewis was presented to investors as the chief executive of HyperVerse. His claimed background included studies at Leeds and Cambridge, along with experience at Goldman Sachs. Those claims were false, and actor Stephen Harrison later said he was paid about £4,000 to play the role.

  • Has anyone been charged for the HyperVerse scam?

Yes, Sam Lee was charged in the US in January 2024 with conspiracy to commit fraud. The SEC also brought charges against Sam Lee and Brenda Chunga over the alleged crypto Ponzi and pyramid scheme. Chunga later pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges connected with securities and wire fraud.

  • How much did HyperVerse steal?

The total amount linked to HyperVerse varies depending on the source used. Reported figures include $1.7bn, $1.89bn and about $1.3bn in customer losses. Even at the lowest estimate, HyperVerse remains one of the largest crypto Ponzi schemes exposed.

  • Is VEND linked to HyperVerse?

VEND has been linked in reports to people previously connected with HyperVerse. You should avoid VEND or any new platform promoted by figures tied to HyperVerse, HyperFund, HyperTech, HyperNation or HyperOne. Similar promises of fixed crypto returns should be treated as a serious warning sign.

  • Can I still recover money if HyperVerse has collapsed?

Yes, you may still have recovery options even though HyperVerse is no longer operating. Claims often focus on banks, card providers, payment processors or exchanges rather than the scam platform itself. WRS can review whether a regulated provider failed to protect you from fraud.

  • How much does it cost to make a HyperVerse claim with WRS?

Eligible HyperVerse claims can be handled by WRS on a no-win, no-fee basis. This means there is no upfront fee to begin your claim. You only pay if money is successfully recovered for you.

  • How long does a HyperVerse recovery claim take?

The timescale depends on how the money was sent and how complex the payment trail is. Some bank fraud claims may be resolved within a few months. Cases involving cross-border crypto tracing, exchanges or multiple wallets can take a year or longer.
